P01. Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria
Principal Investigator: Robert Zeillinger, Dan Cacsire Castillo-Tong

Founded in 1365 as a Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, the MUW is now one of the world largest and most renowned medical universities (www.meduniwien.ac.at). The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a treatment centre of gynaecological cancers, having about 30-40 new cases of ovarian cancer yearly. The Molecular Oncology Group was funded by Robert Zeillinger and has worked on molecular oncology research for many years. The laboratory includes 2 university professors, 2 post docs, 3 Ph.D. students, 6 technical assistants and about 10 physicians who are involved in the research work besides their clinical practice. The laboratory is well equipped with standard molecular biological instruments and can use all instruments, like next generation sequencing, in the university core facilities.

The main topics of the laboratory are: detection and characterization of disseminated tumour cells in gynaecologic cancers and breast cancer, identification and validation of gene expression markers for early diagnosis, prediction and prognosis.

In OCTIPS project, the group will lead work packages of project management (WP1) and dissemination and training (WP7). It is involved in WP2 and will collect and process the clinical materials. The main scientific task in WP3 is to compare gene expression profiling in primary and relapsed tumours and to define genes predominating the relapsed tumours. In addition, P1 also includes a biostatistics team lead by Georg Heinze (http://www.meduniwien.ac.at/user/georg.heinze/) contributing to WP5 in integrating background data.
